Day 17″ Psalm 119:129-136

Today’s reading is my favorite so far from this Psalm.  130 The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.  I love this statement.  You don’t have to be a theologocal mastermind to know what God requires of you.  You just have to spend time reading, meditating and praying over what He has written.  Anyone can and is invited and commanded to do that and told blessings will come from that.  The psamlist goes on to ask for mercy, direction and redemption…which we know we have been given!  And to really think about having our Lord’s face shining on us…I can barely grasp just how awesome that will be!  It makes a warmth come over me just thinking about it!  What a great passage, and what an awesome God we have!

I like the vs. “Establish my footsteps in Thy word, and do not let iniquity have dominion over me.” To me, this is a request for help from God to do what we are trying to do during this reading of Psalm 119–help in establishing our habit of continually being in God’s Word. And it is also that plea to not let our sins run amok. And we know that it is when we don’t make God priority for the day that we don’t spend time in His Word. And that is one of our iniquities. It’s so easy to let life consume

As I was driving to Beaumont today, I was listening on the radio to Sean McDowell, son of Josh McDowell, talking about how he works with young people and his concerns about today’s youth. His big concern is that they do not have a grasp of doctrine and therefore are easily swayed and don’t hold fast to the Truth. This reminded me Psalm 119 because it is continually talking about studying His precepts; longing for His precepts; hiding His precepts in our heart. One comment Sean McDowell made, that I’ve been thinking a lot about also, was that he feels there is going to be more persecution in the years ahead and it will become harder and harder to hold on to God’s precepts if we are not well-grounded in them. I fear that, but also am aware that it is much harder in this day than when I was growing up to live and to talk about our faith. So many more distractions; so much more intolerance. It adds urgency to this chapter of knowing and walking in the statutes of God. I keep striving to do better.

First of all, Amy, thank you for your daily committment and perseverance in doing this blog. I have been gone for almost a week and chose to leave my computer at home (not something I do easily or often) and it was wonderful; yet one of my first things to do as I got home was to check this blog, anxious to see what all you, and others, have written. So thank you! Keep it up!

For today’s passage…I’m with you. I loved these verses! There is so much. As you had mentioned, “The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.” I love this! Haven’t you heard how you can read a passage of scripture or do some Bible study during one season of your life and then read or do the same thing another time, and see it from a whole different perspective? To me, this is God “unfolding” His truths for us. It may be a little at a time so we do not get overwhelmed, or He may just choose to reveal certain things in His Word that applies to our lives at that particular moment. I just love this visual of Him unfolding His Words to us and giving us understanding! He knows our needs…He is the perfect “Daddy”!!!
